Skip to Part II: The Technical FAQ
1. What is The Cowmics Project?
Based on the chaos theory, Cowmics is a multi-comics story updated by creative users world-wide.
But unlike regular comics stories, Cowmics does not tell one story alone.

Each and every part of the story can be taken into a different direction completely!
Just imagine yourself watching a movie where you can decide to watch it end differently.

But why stop there?
In Cowmics you can decide in every part of the story to see it continue differently.
In the middle of the story you can decide you want to see a "happier" continuation or an "evil" one, for example.

Think of a better way to continue a part of the story?
Just upload your own comics frame!
Other users will then be able to upload continuations to your story too.

Each and every comics frame is also rated by the users.
This way when watching a comics you can decide to watch the best rated story.

Not sure which story you want to see?
Just hit the random button and a random comics will be selected for you!
Of course, you can stop the story and choose a different path to view anytime.
2. Does this service cost money?
No. Not unless you want it to.
Watching and adding comics is totally free.
Due to server limitations, I can only allow each comics to have 5 different continuations.
Now let's do the math and see where my problem is.
Let's say the first comics has 5 continuations. Each of these has 5 continuations. Each of them too have 5.
That's already 125 comics:
Multi Story Growth
Do this 4 more times and we have 78,125 comics. This can easily take up 10GB in memory.
The next time we add each one 5 continuations, it will be 50GB more. Then 250GB more. Then 1250GB more...
And this is only for 11 events in each different story. You get the idea.

Will I be charging money so I can pay the server bills?
Nope. This service is still free. You can ALWAYS add to a comics that has less than 5 continuations.
By using extra features, you can donate money to this project and help keep it alive.
As long as I can manage the work and pay the bills, this project will live.
Donations are in U.S Dollars and are done using Paypal's secured service.
3. Who are you?
I am a student who has no time to breathe nor to run a website but tries to do so anyways.
But don't worry about me, time is way overrated these days. And so is breathing ;p.
4. What is done with the money donated for extra features?
Firstly cover the server costs. Then, there is really nothing to worry about, as the server costs eat up all of the donations.
If some money does stay around because of the server's lousey job at eating it, I will greatly improve the website, then perhaps get myself a coffee machine because locking away my bed doesn't seem to work anymore.
5. How do I upload my own comics?
It is quite simple really. Just browse around the comics, find a story you want to add a new or different continuation to and then just create your comics and upload it!
As for the technical part of creating the comics properly and following the upload rules, either read the Technical Frequently Asked Questions or just wait here and my loyal staff composed of magical hand puppets and magnificent stick people will be more than happy to assist you.
[If they are not here within 3 nano-seconds, then just try the Technical Frequently Asked Questions]
6. How can I advertise here?
As long as I can pay the upkeep there will be no pop-ups or annoying animated advertisements.
- When uploading a comics, you can add a clickable URL to your website for free.
- If your website or product are related to drawing and graphics tutorials, applications, techniques and the likes I'd be more than happy to exchange links that will be placed on the art tutorial resource page.

You can also add 'Commercial' comics(comics image containing advertisement) or 'sponsor' existing comics.
Sponsored comics will randomly appear on the main page.
7. How can I help?
You can help simply by uploading nice comics!
Or by helping old ladies cross the street, feeding cats and the likes. That is always helpful.
Or donate money by using extra features. I am also open for suggestions/comments in hope I find the time to read them.
8. How did you come up with this idea?
I always had many ideas but never the time nor tools to bring them to life.
Before starting the university I decided I had to give one of my ideas a go before time becomes a luxury I cannot afford.
I let some coffee take over me and devoted myself to learning Php, Mysql and many other internet things that looked like Japanese and somehow still do... Three weeks later I discovered someone had just beat me to my original idea.
I was ready to give up the countless days spent and the thousands of semi-Japanese pages read and just get a temporary job and spend the rest of my free time partying before I begin at the university.
But one night, while I was watching over my grandmother at the hospital, (The doctors prescribed her the wrong medication. I am happy to say she is doing much better now) I could not fall asleep.
Half awake I started playing with the idea of changing destiny, going back in time to change a little event and what effect it would have a minute later, a day later, etc...
For example: Going back to change my grandmother's medical prescription in time.
On the next day, my grandmother was released home, she was doing much better.
I got back to my Japanese and decided to open up a Comics website where users can change the story's destiny by changing a little event each time.
9. How did you come up with the name Cowmics?
Coffee... It always brings out my creative side :P.
10. Yeah... And... What is the meaning of the name Cowmics?
Oh. That's easy. I can prove without a doubt that this website is very similar to a cow.
Besides. Cows are really cool!
Just ask yourself:
"What would happen if a cow just dropped from a very tall building?".
Due to my curious yet kind nature, I decided to build a website,
which would lead to similar results to those of throwing a cow off a building, only without committing the horrible deed.
11. Do you have anything against cows?
No, no! Absolutely not! Cows are wonderful! Definitiely.
12. I love you! How can I tell other people about your web site?!
You can either tell your friends, put a link or my banner on your website or buy and wear a cool Cowmics T-shirt!
14. Why isn't there a 13?
Well, listen... the Cowmics website is a very mysterious creature.
I don't know the answers to some of these questions myself.
You should just accept some things as they are...
16. Why isn't there a 15?!
Obviously, because 14+1=15.
See 14 to get a better understanding.
17. Why isn't there are a 17?!
There is one now. Happy :P?
18. Don't you think some of the features are too expensive?
Nope.
Ordering take-away food is expensive. Parties are expensive. The train is expensive. University books are expensive.
This website is free.
Noone is forcing you to use the extra features.
In the first place, the idea was to limit the comics to 5 continuations per comics frame.
This is so not everyone creates a continuation to the first comics frame only.
If you wish to support this website, (which was very expensive for me to build ;p) you are welcome to use the extra features and bypass the limits.

Part II: Technical Frequently Asked Questions

A comics random story-line will then be generated and displayed.

2. How do I create new comics?
Click on the comics frame you want to add a continuation to.
Now click on "Create a continuation".
Note: If the comics already has 5 continuations a donation fee will be required.
Please read the uploading rules before uploading a comics.

- You must read the terms of agreement before uploading a comics.
- The image you are uploading must be your own creation.
- Allowed file types: Png (Recommended), jpg, and bmp.

- When advertising here, you may only advertise yourself or organizations in which you are authorized to do so.
- Please make an effort when creating a comics as it will help improve the project as well as be rated by other people.
3. What are moods?
Each comics frame is identified by a mood that indicates wether the current comics frame is Happy, Sad, Neutral, Good, Evil, Chaotic etc...
This allows the viewing user to select a continuation by mood.
4. How can I upload my own moods?
This is an extra feature that requires a donation.
You can upload a mood when uploading a comics frame.
Mood uploading follow the same rules and guidelines as comics uploading.
The mood size should be 32*32 pixels preciesly. Width: 32 pixels. Height: 32 pixels.
5. What are the mood types?
There are 3 mood types:
Public, Special and Commercial.
Public moods can be used freely by everyone.
Special moods can be created and uploaded for a donation fee and can then be used by everyone for a smaller donation fee.
Commercial moods can be created for a single comics frame for a donation fee. These can contain your company/organization logo or any image advertisement indicating that this comics frame was uploaded by your company/organization. Noone, including you, will be able to use this commercial mood again. In order to do so you will need to re-upload and donate again.
6. What are the extra features?
The extra features that require a donation fee are:
Ensure Upload: All comics will be uploaded as long as there are less than 5 continuations.
However, the authorization of the comics is not guaranteed as there may already be 10 comics waiting for authorization but only 5 that can be authorized to complete to 5 continuations. So the "Ensure Upload" donation fee is not a requirement, but it will guarantee that your comics will not be disqualified if the continuation limit had been reached, thus allowing over 5 continuations or giving your comics a priority. This fee is lower than the "Must Upload" fee.
Must Upload: If the continuation limit had been reached you will not be able to upload without paying this donation fee.
Use Special Mood: You may use special moods created by others.
Create a New Mood: You may create and upload your own mood either as Public, Special or Commercial.
Commercial Comics: If you wish your comics image to have some sort of advertisement, a donation fee will be required.
Sponsor: You may sponsor a specific comics for 31 days. There may be only 1 sponsosr per comics frame at any given time.
Extend Sponsorship: The sponsorship can be extended by another 31 days for a maximum of 3 months. Extension fees are lower than sponsorship fees.
7. How are the donation fees calculated for the different features?
The donation fees vary for the different features and depend on a couple of factors.
Among these factors are:
- The current hierarchy level of the comics: The closer the comics frame is to the begining, the more expensive the features.
- The number of current continuations: If a comics frame already has 10 continuations, adding the 11th will cost a bit more than the 10th. The 12th will cost a bit more than the 11th and so on. Important: When using extra features the final donation fee includes the comics authorization ensurance fee as well - this is done so I won't have to reject a comics with a 'paid' mood because there are over 5 continuations.
8. How can I sponsor a comics frame?
Click on the desired comics frame to zoom in on it.
If this comics frame is not already sponsored, then click on "Sponsor this comics".
Fill in the sponsor details.
You will then have to upload an image that is at most 128*32 pixels; 128 or less pixels in width and 32 or less pixels in height. (Example: 129*20 is not a valid size.)
After that you will have to make a donation using paypal on a secured server.
9. Can I supply a link to my website when uploading?
Yes! When uploading a comics you can add a clickable URL link for free.
When creating a commercial comics you can also place a url in the "Created By" field.
10. How much time does it take to authorize a comics/sponsorship?
I authorize comics whenever I find the time.
Sometimes I send a hand puppet search team to find it (the time).
The least is once a day, but please be patient as the world is as unpredictable as my university exams.
Please do not e-mail me asking about authorization.
11. Why hasn't my comics been authorized?
Either:
- The comics uploaded is still waiting for authorization and I did not find the time to authorize it yet.
- The comics uploaded was rejected because there are too many comics continuations for the father comics.
- The comics uploaded contained an advertisement without making a donation.
- The comics uploaded did not follow the rules and guidelines.
- The comics uploaded is very artistic but did not relate to the story...
- The comics uploaded is a lazy attempt to create quality comics in 15 seconds.
- A giant cow ate the comics and we are truly sorry and just want you to know that me and my hand puppets will take better care of such incidents in the future.
12. How do I find out if my comics was rejected?
If you left your E-Mail address when uploading I will usually send you an e-mail explaining why it was rejected.
If your comics was sent along with a donation I will at most times refund - this means that humans make mistakes and I am human.
Please send me an E-Mail to the refund E-Mail address for refunds, if your comics was rejected and the system/I/hand puppets messed up.
13. But I don't know how to create a comics!
Neither do I.
So I put some effort into it, practiced a bit and I am really getting the hang of it!
You might want to draw the comics on paper first and then scan it to the computer.
There is a little Art Tutorial pages waiting for people just like you!
14. What does Commercial Comics mean?
Generally users are not allowed to upload comics images that also contain advertisements.
If you wish to do so, you have to select the Commercial check box on the Create Comics Continuation page.
Note that this feature requires a donation fee.
Your comics still has to be a continuation to and a part of the story.
This project is still about art.
As a commercial comics you can also place a web url in the "Created By" field.
15. What's the deal with the verification image?
It is used to stop automated bots from spamming.
I am sorry if it makes uploading/sponsoring a bit more difficult.
It is a minimal security measure as everyone is out to get me! ;).
